Lifetime Work Experience and Its Effects on Earnings: Retrospective Data From the 1979 Income Survey Development Program

Report Number: P23-136

Overview

This report presents data on periods of interruption in work cross-classified by sex, school years completed, race, and Spanish origin. The report concludes that such interruptions accounted for little of the discrepancy between earnings of men and women. The study does not attempt to assess the importance of non-market factors–such as the possibility that some women choose flexible, low paying jobs that permit family activities. However, the data indicate that differences in such varibles as education, general work experience, and work interruptions do not explain the income gap between men and women.
